In a significant shake-up, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has removed the captains and head coaches from the men's national selection committee. This decision comes in the wake of Pakistan's disappointing innings defeat by 47 runs to England in the first Multan Test. The committee was initially overhauled less than a week prior, with the induction of Aleem Dar, Aaqib Javed, and Azhar Ali alongside the captains and coaches.
The newly trimmed selection panel now consists of only five members: Dar, Javed, Ali, Asad Shafiq, and Hasan Cheema. This change was confirmed by the PCB's official website, which updated the selection committee's page to reflect the new structure.
Following the recent defeat, Shan Masood and Jason Gillespie had expressed their support for Babar Azam to remain in the squad despite his recent struggles. However, Azam was ultimately dropped just two days before the second Test, following extensive discussions among the new selectors, Masood, Gillespie, and Usman Wahla, the PCB's director of international cricket operations.
The revamped selection committee has already garnered praise for its choices, highlighted by the outstanding performances of debutant Kamran Ghulam, who scored a century, and off-spinner Sajid Khan, who returned to the squad after previously being dropped. Khan recorded impressive figures, taking seven wickets in an innings, marking a record for bowlers in Tests in Multan.
Looking ahead, the new selection committee will be tasked with announcing Pakistan's squads for the upcoming ODI and T20I series in Australia next month.
