Dale Steyn, the legendary former South African pacer, has confirmed that he will not return as the bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. While this marks the end of his coaching stint with SRH, he will continue his coaching journey with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league.
In a heartfelt post on X, Steyn expressed gratitude, stating, "A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL; unfortunately, I won't be returning for IPL 2025. However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa."
Earlier this year, Steyn had opted out of IPL 2024 for personal reasons, leading to the appointment of former New Zealand cricketer James Franklin as the new bowling coach to work alongside head coach Daniel Vettori.
Steyn, now 41, has a rich history in the IPL, having played for teams like Deccan Chargers, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers, and Gujarat Lions. He last played for RCB in the IPL 2020 before stepping into his coaching role with SRH ahead of the 2022 season. His contributions as a coach have been notable, particularly in nurturing talent such as Umran Malik and other young pacers within the Sunrisers squad.
In IPL 2024, Sunrisers reached the final but lost to KKR, marking their first final appearance since 2018. With the successful Vettori-Franklin coaching duo, SRH may consider retaining their coaching staff for the upcoming season.
